Last days of new years break

Checked out a new op shop, which was good. There are some church ones in the area that I’ve been to, the type that only open once or twice a week and generally when you’re at work. There’s one on St Georges Square, next to the church that’s around the corner from the Greek Orthodox blue domed church. Also went to on in Largs Bay on Jetty Road. Today’s op shop was a Vinnies one, I bought 4 cushions (2 for use, 2 for their cushion inserts), the book about work by Elizabeth Wynhausen and the Australian Book of Ocean Writing, edited by James Bradley. As I typed that, I imagined my sister saying something disparaging about him, due to her university friend having an intense but platonic/unrequited romance with him. University days are great for that sort of thing :) But really, he’s managed to be erudite and support himself as a full time writer. Can only envy that. Then I came home and sorted and filed bills, placed books on book shelves, washed and “styled” the yellow cushion covers ...

Socialising

Friday night I invited myself along with Adam and Rachel and the No 1 scrabble player from WA and Simon (newly relocated to Leichhardt and in shell shock at the difference between small town Adelaide and big smoke Sydney) to go to some basement venue in Twin Street. The venue was so small as to be highly difficult to attend, unless you were friends with the performer. We were there to see Rachel's friends, a trio of female DJs, she assured me the audience would all be their circle.  Due to the technology being a DJ these days only involves clicking a few times to queue up a few songs and a lot of sitting at the ledger trying not to look bored. I assured Russell he could return to WA and reassure his peeps he had mingled with the cream of the cream of Adelaide's hip society, that he couldn't get any better, on a Friday night, than hanging out in a basement level venue, discretely lighted, being served diminishing supplies of Coopers Vintage Ale (Simon assured me that it...

Opting to op shop whilst at uni

Well I had a lovely entry to read about op shops thanks to seagreen . I love love op shopping, and in fact it's an entry point to being my friend, that you are prepared to traipse around these joints. Can remember Splatty asking me once how I'd spent a day off and being thrilled that I'd spent it in Vinnies. She was temporarily living in the country and would regularly drag back home objects she got from their Vinnies, such as great vinyl chairs, desks, clothes. (She always has a well furnished and decorated house, with a vision of her character: Feathers, fedoras, paintings, books, music, hat stands) and all done on the smell of an oily rag. Can also remember my friend Sabby admiring an outfit that I informed her cost less than the price of my new havianas. Oh, the glory. Anyhow, seagreen did put me onto at least one op shop I'd ommitted. Yes, last week whilst in Sydney I had actually popped into Broadway Betty, but felt too overwhelmbed by the stamina required for the...
