My long weekend at Maria Island

I've left it too late to properly explain how wonderful it was to stay on an island with no cars and no shops and nothing to spend your money on. Hordes of children pedalled around in cycling gangs, ruling the island.

We camped next to some friends of Budi's: Adrian, Don, Don's 13 year old daughter Kate and her school friend Stashy, had a lot of fun with them. Adrian and Don tried to convince me to join them on the midnight up-hill bike ride to the top of Fossil Cliffs. The track abruptly ends at the top of grassy cliffs which dramatically descend. Rock juts out into the ocean, where in the morning three of us sunbaked and paddled and let ourselves by washed over by crashing waves. Age old fossils were frozen into the cliffs and then we walked home through more yellow grassland, past old square fenced grave yards, 1800s buildings and a far off cottage that looked like something from County Kerry.
