melbourne in spring
when it's a warm spring day, I just love MElbourne. It's so innovative, creative, design conscious and experimental. People launch new ideas, the health services are (currently) superior, oh there is so much to love and I wish I was working there at the moment, if only to be a little closer to Andrew.
I was there on my scholarship researching patient education for people living with cancer, their needs etc. However that didn't stop me haggling with a patient in a game of "this taxi is mine" when said patient tried to grab the taxi I'd been waiting 40 minutes for! Hmm, not my best moment. The taxi driver that had finally picked up my booking was quite on my side; arranged to pick me up from my last social outing and take me to the airport-he also ended up grabbing me a latte and some baklava from Northcote which was his little present from him to me-I think I have a fan... and I was a sucker for the attention.
Caught up with Amelia at her current digs in Northcote, she is sharing with a sensible girl who bought the cottage in halves with her Dad (I guess if you've got a job in Melbourne it's a good idea to launch into the market, because there is always the option of changing jobs without having to change residences-another advantage to Melbourne, I think). She's set up with her sewing desk to make the obi bags, and has a very retro fake wood bedhead that is almost collectable. Jules came by for a haircut in preparation for the date, which gave me a chance to speculate about whether or not he resembles Ben Mendelsohn, or if indeed Ben M resembles him, and so forth. Forgot to pull up my favourite episode of LMW, with Ben M and Claudia Karvan reenacting dancing styles from their past (high school, art school, music school).
However tonight after dinner at P's house, when she and Navi were canvassing some extra dance moves for their belly dancing/free composition/comedy dance pieces, I thought of the episode again. Some suggestions: Budi repeating his torn trousers from trampolining to the tune of "Shakin your ass", Kieran doing the sprinkler and putting out the fire that Rex wood chopped/prepped to "Ring of Fire". Kirsten did the stomping dance move, I reminsced about "I can't Dancë"" (a bad stage of my life, when I actively chose to listen to Phil Collins); Rex remembered NOT dancing (he claimed to listen to heavy metal, but then showed a strong knowledge of Icehouse....). P was into hip hop. All different dance styles for different school lives, yet we were together as one dining group....
So back to Mills and Jules; he was sad because yet again Fairfield op shop had failed to live up to its promise: a whole rack of shirts turned out to be XL. He also got bashful the time he was interviewed and featured in the Sunday Age ("I looked poncy... no, those were my own clothes") etc. He's really gone out there getting his plays performed at all opportunities and festivals, developing a body of work that step by step builds his profile and reputation. I admire it.
