books, the ocean, peace and joy
I could just dedicate these journal entries to books I am reading or have enjoyed.
Ms ottoman has started reading The Student Chronicles by Alice Garner; a book I purchased in Williamstown last. I gave my copy to my sister for Christmas so shall have to keep my eyes peeled for a second copy; and also a spare copy of Stasiland by Anna Funder, which was probably the best book I read all year (and again, I gave my copy to my sister for Christmas)
Alice writes of turning her back on acting and theatre to go to university; but before she started she did once last tour with Anthill theatre company to Perth. Instead of attending O Week she was teaching herself to surf, making multiple attempts to stand up on an old surf board in the Indian Ocean.
I kept substituting indigo for Indian, thinking of the Perth sea as somehow exotic for being so far away.
Speaking of standing up, I CAN STAND UP! When on a board! Yes, on my day off I finally mastered the skill of surfing, as far as catching a wave, standing up and going into shore is concerned (extras not included). Was very impressed and proud of myself, the exhilaration lingered into the evening at art club with Miss P, a sense of joy at what I had been able to do by being patient and embracing the ocean. I tried to capture some of that joy in preparing my new lino print, which I don't want to say too much about, but is going to be a triptych (that's 3 images mounted together) of the female form, my prints recreating my life drawing images.
