Duckworth and german philosophers
Currently I am reading some book about the Mitford girls, the english sisters including two facists and one communist. Like a lot of english folklore, it covers the effect of the 1930s on young aristocrats living in the between war years and how many of them developed an interest in politics that led them towards socialism, republicanism, facism, a desire for economic growth and a rejection of edwardian values.
As always, my perusal and choice of reading material unconsciously echoes themes from conversations with friends-indeed only last night I was speaking to Duckworth about KRudd's favourite German theologian-Bonhoeffer (don't expect me to have spelt this correctly). KRudd had written last year in The Monthly about how was influenced by this man, and Duckworth explained to me last night (as I callously had a backseat of taxi exclusive mobile phone conversation) that Bonhoeffor had values and beliefs that he stuck to despite the negative personal effect and he suffered for them-dying in a concentration camp. As the biographers of my book also explained, there was a struggle between personal indivdualistic beliefs and beliefs for the greater good of the community. What an interesting time the 1930s was! I do love that mid century time, the passionate fight off between facism and communism from the 30s to the 50s.
So shall go and finish reading...
