a football playing poet
My friends like to remember an offhand comment I made once_that my ideal guy would be a football playing poet. But I meant it as wanting to meet a creative that could also appreciate the spirit and theatre of football, or a stadium sport. It was like reading today's profile of adam cullen in the SMH and him admitting to becoming addicted to the bullring fights whilst living in Spain; or John Irving always writing about wrestling, or a now playwright bravely wearing a Tigers scarf. Anyway, my latest sign that this can be possible, even amongst athletes, was sparked by an article I read about this guy, Rupert Betheras, who has turned to painting after leaving professional football.
His descriptions of Central Australia reminded me of my attempt into Lake Mungo last month (photo is of the dust storm and rain that turned the road too soft to drive on); and also Texas-Sarah Hay's fantastic new book which is set in the Top End. It's obvious in this article about Rupert in the Age that as a player his personality was intriguing and not really completely expressed until he travelled and went north. Good to have someone from such a mainstream culture embrace politics and art and the environment. I miss how much fun it was doing art classes with kids on camps.
