exciting news and wish lists and small concerns about society

Umm.
Exciting news: scholarship.

Now whilst that is exciting news, I am having a little bit of trouble cheer leading myself up for it. Partly it's because I am all in tune with the notion of self regulated learning and learning to utilise your inner drive more than extrinsic factors... but also because I am too used to being modest... and also because at the moment, given my age and modern society, the biggest applause seems to go to baby announcements or $$$.

ON the former, it's definitely baby boom time for the early 30 somethings... I don't know if the baby delivery rates for my generation are up for the past few years or not, but there has definitely been a baby boom amongst friends. Which is especially nice for those that have been trying for a while, but hard for those who are (secretly) trying and (secretly) not succeeding... and even for those who aren't quite so polarised into either camp, there is the change to friendship dynamics, I certainly notice that some new parents seek out other new parents, mostly out of bleary eyed sleep deprived relief, but sometimes in that cliquey parents club way that Bridget Jones would dub "smug couples".

However, having said all that, I think my friends, whether with a junior or not, are pretty good at being friends because we're friends, not friends because we're the SAME.... however new formative friendships, at this age, seem to be more based on demographic similarity and that's a wee shame. (again, being polarised into demographic ghettos, and does it breed intolerance for differentness?), I like it when varieties of people (occupation, income, independence) are brought together for interaction.
