How do you get to work?
I can recall a conversation I had with a four year old boy in my first year of work. He wanted to know how I travelled to work everyday:
"Do you walk, drive or catch a plane?"
This has been a pertinent question because I've lost my car licence and now have to walk (too far), cycle, bus, carpool or catch a taxi.
Before I moved here I used to walk or cycle everyday. The cycling was way easier than walking and never once did I try to talk myself out of cycling for the lazier option. It was fast and convenient and enjoyable and there was an annoying hill in the middle but I just got used to it. How different it is nowadays. My cycle distance is reasonable but annoying (10 kilometres), hijacked by aggressive magpies and sabotaged by hills in the middle. But if it was my only option all those negative factors would be accepted. The bus trip is at the very quickest, 34 minutes from door to door, so not much faster than the cycle and $4.20 a pop.
So, cycling it is. I have a bike but investigated purchasing a fancier glossier new and improved and fun bike. But shoudl I be getting an even better electric powered bike (is encouraging EVEN more cycling the aim of my additional bike purchase the aim) or stick to the one I've put on lay by, which is a lighter-weight, easier and more convenient version of the same old. OR is there really nothing at all wrong with my present bike and I shoudl just get stuck into it and hope that the more frequently I cycle, the easier I will survive the 10 kilometre hilly trips.
Oh, how I miss the easy daily cycle and the notion that that was the ONLY way to get to work...
