The drones and the perfect dinner party

I'm one of the lucky people that have a really good hairdresser who is also an interesting person. Midweek I saw her, and she offered to let me listen to her Drones album.

This interaction actually started with me ducking my head into Frankie magazine and her teasing me for being a bookworm but confessing she likes the silence to concentrate... but then we pleasantly diverted into a talk about modern music and the dark side and kindred quirks.

She talked up the drones, and I thought I'd like them, they're on a path of musical interests for me that goes from Nick Cave, Dirty Three, Mess Hall, Peter Head and Bridezilla. Plus I remember admiring their duffel coat.

Then she asked if I was heading to the All Tomorrow's Parties gig for the Sydney Festival. I said that I was eyeing it off, but didn't currently have a buddy to attend with, what with my kindred Nick Cave spirits being parents of under 2s/overseas/travelling in South America or China/working 7 days a week/writing up PhDs/interstate. But it is a list of everything muscially and culturally that is acceptable in Australian music to me. No ego rock; it's like a Melbourne music festival in Sydney...it's Berlin, it's the 70s, it's people who also write and read and paint and travel and like documentaries...

She said how she'd definitely have Nick Cave at her dinner party, and I agreed he was the real deal, not just a muso but a deep thinker, with so many levels of thinking going on, influencing his work and his creations, with powerful things to create. "He's no pseudo intellectual" she declared, and I laughed. For pseudo intellectual is EXACTLY the term I'd give for the annoying ethan hawke character in reality bites.

Of course then i got frustrated trying to keep up with the dinner party list. Offered up PJ Harvey which kept me in the game, ("They were PERFECT for each other" she agreed, "But they were artists, 'they needed to be on their own"). But I just want PJ to be happy. Love PJ, love how she is like a female version of Nick Cave, with her demons and her love of music going back through eras, she studied art, is into sculpt making, her music is an intellectual exploration.

Anyhow, am continuing to work and polish my dinner party list, I have 12 or so hours until I have to drop it off to the Drones album owner. What total nerd fun!
