boys who love ani di franco
It's hard to imagine, with rain falling outside my window, that one week ago it was so hot... and that I'd spent a day outdoors huddled under my sarong at the Ani di Franco concert. I went with friends, went because both Nat Splat and Andy spoke of her fondly and because it was held at a vineyard. The latter aspect was somewhat overrated (no shade, little ambience) but it was good to be out, good to see a crowd and to hear both my hairdressers's husband (an architect who sold me his surfboard) and later on Andy, rhapsodise about an intelligent woman who writes folk/protest songs. Somewhat predictably, I liked Untouchable Face best and also liked Red Letter Year. I wouldn't say I was converted, but was pleased to share the experience with my friends, especially when one was such a big fan.
D also had a heart to heart with me about marriage and the meaning of it, the value that people do and don't put into the commitment of marriage, and finally she explained about the tribes associated with Canadian Inuits. If I have it right, men when they marry join the maternal line, so if a male crow marries a female wolf, he becomes a wolf and their children are wolves.... several days later when I saw her again, she wanted to revise her hardline on weddings and pull back to a less strident viewpoint. Don't we all want to revise and revise our viewpoints?
