So P came and stayed with me for Womad. She was reading The History of V, written by an anthroplogist who had done extensive research into the vagina as the creative life giving force that it is. Said that on each plane flight over the past week she'd been sat next to a talker who wanted to know what she was reading, and then went very silent.
Also bumped into Pen (and husband Ben, an ex Adelaidaidean) at Womad and she recommended... something, as well as David Mitchell's books, said Black Swan Green was even better than Ghost Written. I, in turn, recommended Incredibly Close and Extremely.. by Jonathan Safran Foer.
Duckworth is reading his way through Chinese history and dynasties, cultural wars, imperialism, Tai-Peng and all that. His photo album of January is amazing, he stayed in Chinese versions of Amsterdam, all terrace houses, stone cobbled streets and canals. He recommends Nico's biography as well as Janet Turner Hospital.
Bought a 70s era Time Book ""Cities of the World" title with New York as its topic. Was attracted to this era of the city, as described in children's fiction I read (Judy Blume, someone Klein), the Woody Allen tributes as well as the mean streets side.
Just re-read IN THE CUT by Susanna Moore, really love that book, love the movie of it as well, Jane Campion is a genius with a great creative flair and vision that creates something atsmophere and a filmic dimension as a supplement to a wonderful literary piece. Remembered favourite parts of it, like when a character impresses the lead, for the best "Travel wear""spotting: someone on the plane from Florida wearing only a bathing suit.
