Womadelaide 2009

The weekend was spent in Botanic Park. Not as dusty as last year, and whilst I didn't miss the 40 degree heat, I did miss how the dust motes swirled around in the evening sun and created a magical vibe.

Was fortunate to continuously bump into friends all weekend, and spent plenty of quality time with them, from Megan and Ali, Pen and Ben, Mills and Luis, family and plenty of acquaintances too. Luis gave me a tip about Ego Lemos, an East Timorese musician who charmed us all at Moreton Stage when he paid tribute to International Womens Day, and to women everyone for giving life. He also sent shout outs to Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, sitting in his audience. GGY was also wonderful, beautiful voice but also quite playful in his own way, as though Womadelaide was a forum that he could embrace and enjoy. Neil Finn was a legend, I love his songs, he is the ultimate songwriter. The Audreys were good to hear again but I still walked away, nothing being able to touch the gigs I enjoyed in their Wheatsheaf days. Speed Caravan were very very cool, Algerian musicians with ear rings and tattooes, playing heavy fast guitar and Cure songs. P loved Mihirangi, who taught her Maori dancing so she could be a stage dancer! Heather, over from Melbourne, said Lo Cor de La Plana were her highlight: Marseille boys doing harmonies and hand clapping and wearing great French striped tshirts! J
