Suburbs changing and not for the better?
I found the link to the fantatic 52 suburbs blog at sea greens page. She is an amazing photographer, and I also enjoy her short narrative about the neighbourhood, describing if she is a new visitor or has memories dating back 20 years. And as I suspected, many of the inner west places (Glebe, Newtown) were better in the older days (cheaper, edgier, high impact street culture). Money just sanitises and makes things boring. My sister in particular has a rant about how public space isn't managed well in new developments, either heritage is lost, public spaces are taken away, or not reshaped or reinvigorated, they are just turned into apartment and office blocks. The way in which Port Adelaide is being renovated being a fine case. This neighbourhood has really relevant urban Aboriginal heritage, elders who are able to describe fishing and feeding from the water, and it's just being paved over with cement and not being replaced with anything that is interesting to look at. Both environmentally and historically it's very sad.
Good news? On the heritage front? Robe is still lovely.
