Movies that scare the living bejeesus out of you
A week or so ago I was at the book club gathering and instead of talking about books, we were talking about DVDs/ Sharyn made the apt comment that R rated movies are R rated for a reason-they are often scary. She thought the top 5 movies that left a permanent scar on her psyche were R rated.
I agreed, citing what happened when I borrowed "Requieum for a Dream". The librarian issuing it wanted to confirm that I knew it was R rated. I assumed he was querying my age, but retrospectively realised he was querying my readiness to be completely shattered. That was a scary movie, scary in it's reality and the depressing downsliding world it portrayed. Maths boy had described it as "good but confronting" and he was totally correct. Sharyn nodded in acknowledgement, said that was an example of her top 5.
Sometimes the movie version is easier to handle than the book. Candy by Luke Davies is a claustrophobic and chilling read. It's definitely worth reading, but the effect lingers and presses at you. It's not a book I could ever return to. The movie itself is easier to cope with, a stylised theatrical version, slow and consciously directed-you can understand the entire message in one viewing.
Currently reading a book by Francine Prose, I liked Goldengrove, and am enjoying the current novel (though can't recall the title)/
