A day in the life of a toddler...

Last night I cycled to visit friends in the neighbourhood. Quite honestly, that has been my goal ever since I left Tasmania-to live in walking or cycling or train-line distance of friends again. Megan and Ali have moved into West Croydon* and Meg and Pete live in cycling distance-achieved!

The evening cycle is so enjoyable. The night before I'd looped around the semi industrial estate near the bus depot (you have a birds eye view of the buses, looking Thomas Tank Engine style child-like, when you pass over on the train line), before weaving my way through all the neighbourhood parks, passing the AFL training session and cutting past the cemetery. I couldn't find my all time favourite 1960s house though... Last night I needed to use a printer-my friends have been similarly in the mode of house spring cleaning. I found them succesfully filling a beanbag chair with beans-hard task.

Today I was feeling a little concerned. Whole day with the kid, and no car, thus no suburban excursions. For the first time since the first 6 weeks of his birth, I could only go to the places that my feet could take me. Which turned out to be everywhere! We caught the train to the beach-8 minutes! And the train is free at the moment due to track works. Immediately I schemed all the bike trips-to-the-beach we can take, either with the carrier or a newly purchased bike seat. The kid was enjoying himself so much, and it was such a quiet carriage, I considered staying on it to the end of the train line. But no, we got off and headed down to the beach where we sat under the jetty and made sand castles and read gossip magazines (me or the kid?) and swam a little bit in the sun and a little bit in the shade and once he started throwing sand, we left.

I was reminded, again, that it's a blessing to be on foot, to eat food you cooked yourself, to borrow books from the library, to have public transport.

*They are living in such an awesome house, deservedly so, after moving 3 times in 3 years (landlords selling the house 3 times in a row!). Hope their next move is on their timeline... The house has lovely features-wood trimmed doorways, a room with white stained floorboards, a kitchen with a red wall and exposed warm bricks.
