Parenting perspectives

My husband says that having a child is like having your heart on the outside. My tactic is survival parenting- like the Ben Stiller character in The Royal Tennenbaums. I am always being self deprecating about my son, trying to cover up how much I adore him, hardening my heart because I know how lucky I was, and I might only get to have one and I just can't put all my eggs in one basket. It's silly, as hardening my heart will do nothing. Being a parent is the most creative thing you can do, endlessly interesting. My son is growing up fast, his latest tactic is childcare goodbye via videophone, not person.

Duckworth picked up in the great VHS clearance and has Man Who Fell to Earth, which I reserved from the library. D speculated about what he missed out by not leaving the valley for boarding school; I explained how demoralising it is to be dependent on peers for all of your emotional support-rebellion isn't worth much without a witness. All this talk is because I have school reunion.

I spoke to Jed yesterday, the first thing he asked was "Are you still listening to your Canadian dork rock?" "Oh, you buy CDs, that's cute!". He used to work in a record store, only buys records (but is sick of having to flip them over) and trip to visit brother turned into a circuit of North American record stores. I was surprised his stories were so interesting, and we talked about work and parenting and values, in a way I couldn't when I stereotyped him as an egotistical guy. Now I find him funny and nicer. I talked about this last night with Rachel, how Hugh looked like Dolly magazine, Dave the hot architect student was a bad kisser, Ben was too easy to tease.  I prefer attractiveness you discover by surprise, only known to you and a handful of others.

Not related to anything at all, but The Monthly articles by Kate Jennings are great. The article on Wake In Fright my father in law loves and her one about Griffith and Murray Darling.
